What is Pilates?

Simply put, Pilates is stretching and strengthening with control.

It is an exercise system developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the 1920’s – he called it “Contrology” which he defined as “the science and art of coordinated body-mind-spirit development through natural movement under strict control of will."

It is an exercise program that you look forward to, that ENGAGES you, leaves you REFRESHED and ALERT with a feeling of physical and mental wellbeing.

Focus is on the Powerhouse (Abdomen, lower back, buttocks and thighs) all of which are supported on the apparatus and strengthened, enabling the rest of the body to move freely.

At Bermuda Bodyworks we pride ourselves in keeping the method pure.

Is Pilates for me?

  • Pilates is for everyone; young, old, athletic, sedentary, those in need of rehabilitation from sports injuries etc... or those wanting to improve their strength, and flexibility without adding bulk.

Why is it good for me?

  • People leave here feeling better about themselves. It requires focus and steady breathing and results in feeling energized and refreshed.

  • It can help with body image and a sense of wellbeing.

  • People who sit at desks all day tend to have back and neck issues. Pilates is part of the healing solution and benefits posture and core strength.

  • Older students find it benefits their flexibility, outlook on life and, overall, gives them a sense of youthfulness, confidence and strength.

  • Pilates will help to relieve chronic pain or joint stress.

  • Pregnant students find it gives them optimal health and strong muscles to support their pregnancy before, during and after. (We strongly advise that you begin Pilates before you become pregnant.)

  • Athletes find Pilates helps them with endurance, over all body strength, flexibility, fitness and prolongs their careers.
